Following the concentrated release of summer content in July, the global mobile games market remained content-driven in August. Honor of Kings, Peacekeeper Elite, and SLG titles continued to dominate the top of the revenue chart, but the products that truly drove growth were mainly powered by anniversary celebrations, new versions, limited-time gacha pools, and new launches.
This month's rankings also revealed a noteworthy trend: download growth was concentrated in open-world, hypercasual, and simulation-management titles, while revenue growth centered on anime-inspired games, idle RPGs, and new releases based on established IP. The two sides of the market continued to diverge clearly.
Below are Diandian Data's Top 20 rankings for global mobile game downloads, revenue, and growth in August 2026, together with an analysis of key products and industry trends.
Total Downloads Retreat Sharply, with Mid- and Long-Tail Markets Down More Than 20%
According to Diandian Data, total global mobile game downloads fell by more than 7.71% month on month in August 2026. The figure was nearly unchanged from August last year, rising only 0.1% year on year. By platform, a sharp decline on the App Store was the primary driver of the overall pullback. Its share of mobile game downloads fell further to 18.9% this month, while Google Play downloads still achieved modest growth.
By market, India (13.1%), the United States (6.3%), and Brazil (6.2%) recorded modest download growth and ranked among the largest contributors. Leading markets including China, Indonesia, and Russia saw slight declines, while mid- and long-tail markets fell more visibly, with decreases exceeding 20% in some markets.
Casual games remained in the lead with a contribution share of more than 44.6%. Against the backdrop of an overall decline, only arcade and educational titles achieved download growth, demonstrating a degree of resilience, while puzzle and simulation games posted some of the largest decreases. At the product level, global evergreen titles such as Free Fire and Roblox continued to dominate the top of the download chart, forming the foundation of the worldwide mobile game download market.
Global Mobile Game Downloads and Top Gainers: Top 20
In August, Garena's battle royale title Free Fire once again topped the global mobile game download chart with more than 33.19 million downloads. With momentum from its ninth anniversary continuing, the FFWS SEA Fall tournament, which began on August 14, further strengthened the title's esports exposure and community activity in its core Southeast Asian markets, helping it maintain stable downloads.
SYBO's classic runner Subway Surfers continued its high-frequency World Tour operations in August, maintaining exposure through summer maps, seasonal missions, and limited-time collectibles. The 'Cosmic Crossroads' update released on August 24 took the running action into space and added low-gravity challenges, new characters, and new boards, bringing fresh visual and gameplay experiences. During the same period, the returning collaboration with popular party game Among Us further expanded the title's momentum. Despite the overall market decline, Subway Surfers downloads grew another 25% month on month in August. With more than 4.86 million incremental downloads, it ranked second on the download gainers chart.
In August, despite the decline in the overall global game download market, hypercasual titles built around established mechanics—including Bus Traffic Fever, Pizza Ready!, and Magic Sort!—remained active performers. Each recorded more than 13 million downloads, representing month-on-month growth of 14.7%, 19.1%, and 24.2%, respectively. On the one hand, traffic management, restaurant operation, and water-sorting mechanics have been validated by the market over time and possess broad, stable user bases, providing fundamental support for continued acquisition. On the other hand, these products benefit on Google Play from instantly understandable ad creatives, low device-compatibility requirements, and mature paid-acquisition payback models, giving them strong download resilience.
During the reporting period, Gangstar: Mirage City, a new urban open-world title published by Tencent's Level Infinite and licensed by Gameloft, topped the global mobile game download gainers chart with more than 12.74 million downloads in less than two weeks after launch. The Gangstar franchise's brand equity and more than 30 million pre-registrations provided a vast initial user pool. The product's breakout may also have benefited from discussion surrounding the GTA 6 gameplay showcase. After the GTA 6 gameplay demonstration was officially released on August 27, searches and content sharing related to 'GTA-like mobile games' increased further, providing additional exposure during the title's second week after launch.
Two other titles that benefited from the August popularity of crime-themed open-world games were Gangster Miami RP and Mafia City RP, both from Vietnamese developer Universe Game. Set in 3D open cities, both combine free driving, urban exploration, mission challenges, and character progression, while their store positioning centers on keywords including 'Gangster,' 'Miami,' 'Mafia,' and 'Open World.' The former, in particular, features a Miami-inspired coastal city and sports cars, closely matching the theme of GTA 6 and therefore capturing relatively more of the traffic dividend.
Another new title, Mystery Dumpling from Vietnamese publisher Brocker Bus Studio, benefited from the global popularity of the physical blind-box toy 'Mystery Squishy Dumpling.' With more than 11.58 million downloads, it rose to second place on August's global mobile game download gainers chart. The unboxing concept built around steamer blind boxes and stress-relief toys shaped like soup dumplings had already educated users through the physical product's viral reach on TikTok, YouTube, and other social platforms. Supported by the Vietnamese publisher's paid-acquisition capabilities in lightweight games, the title quickly went viral and scaled, entering the top ranks of free charts in multiple markets during its first month.
It is worth noting that the products above share strong similarities with the concurrently resurgent BabyBus Kids in their app-icon characters, color schemes, and composition. Their visual composition may all trace back to the physical blind-box toy mentioned earlier. BabyBus Kids may have benefited from the potential search traffic, chart visibility, and similar-app recommendations generated by the former's rapid rise, although the two products actually use different gameplay. At the same time, the BabyBus brand's long-term presence in children's interactive games, combined with the summer surge in demand for children's content, may have jointly driven the title's download breakout. BabyBus Kids added more than 3.47 million downloads in August, an increase of approximately 246.8% month on month.

Total Revenue Edges Down Month on Month, While the Existing iOS User Base Supports Stability
According to Diandian Data, estimated total global mobile game revenue fell approximately 1.29% month on month in August 2026, but still increased by more than 3.49% from August last year, significantly outperforming the download side. By platform, App Store revenue was broadly flat month on month and rose 6.22% year on year. With a 60.5% contribution share, it continued to form the foundation of global mobile game revenue. Google Play revenue declined both month on month and year on year, making it the main source of this month's pullback.
By market, the United States (26.6%), China (18.5%), and Japan (16.3%) ranked as the top three contributors. Mature leading markets represented by these countries posted only modest declines and still generated the majority of global mobile game revenue. Mid- and long-tail markets came under more pronounced pressure as downloads and user activity weakened.
Driven by anniversary celebrations, limited characters, and seasonal events, role-playing games maintained the lead with a contribution share approaching 30% (28.4%). Together with strategy, casual, and action games, they continued to form the core segments of the revenue market. Data fluctuations among leading titles were relatively limited overall.
Global Mobile Game Revenue and Top Gainers: Top 20
On August's global mobile game revenue chart, Tencent flagship Honor of Kings retained the top position with stable estimated revenue of nearly $149 million, rising another 0.2% month on month. The second- and third-ranked titles were also unchanged: Tencent's other blockbuster, Peacekeeper Elite, and Century Games' flagship SLG Whiteout Survival. Their revenue decreased modestly by 7.1% and 1.3% month on month, respectively.
Fate/Grand Order topped August's global mobile game revenue gainers chart with more than $46.63 million in estimated incremental revenue and month-on-month growth exceeding 295.9%. The Japanese server launched its 11th-anniversary celebration at the beginning of the month. Anniversary-limited Servant Hassan-i Sabbah, two Destiny Order Summons, a Beast Order Summon, and paid Lucky Bag Summons directly encouraged concentrated spending by core players, pushing estimated single-day revenue above $3.15 million. The summer event that followed, 'Chaldea's Great South Seas Battle,' created a second wave of spending after the anniversary peak and extended the elevated revenue trend.
Several other ranked Tencent titles also benefited from anniversary updates. VALORANT Mobile's first-anniversary update, 'Show Your Edge,' introduced the new agent Poseidon, a new mode, and limited weapon skins in a concentrated release. This drove August revenue up more than 42.4% month on month to an estimated $35.89 million, a new high since launch. Hero Kill likewise more than tripled its monthly revenue with the support of 15th-anniversary limited skins, treasures, and returning-player events, reaching its highest monthly revenue in nearly five years. League of Legends: Wild Rift, Battle of Golden Spatula, and Naruto Mobile also posted significant gains. By concentrating anniversary momentum to reactivate and engage core users, Tencent's proven model of limited characters, skins, bundles, and discount stores once again demonstrated its effectiveness through a revenue surge.
Japanese and South Korean publishers remained frequent names near the top of the gainers chart, while established IP once again proved to be a reliable monetization engine. Devsisters' new idle RPG CookieRun: Crumble, launched in late July, entered its first full month of operation in August and rose to second place on the gainers chart with more than $17.38 million in incremental revenue. After achieving a strong debut through the mature CookieRun IP and a market-tested idle-progression framework, the title entered a second revenue peak near month-end following the release of the new TSSR character Brightseeker Cookie, guild battles, and additional main-story content. Its nearly 33% overseas revenue share further demonstrates the IP's global user base and monetization potential.
Close behind, KONAMI's Suikoden STAR LEAP, launched in Japan on August 7, also scaled rapidly on the strength of an established IP, debuting at No. 3 on the gainers chart with more than $16.63 million in incremental revenue. As the first new Suikoden title in 14 years and the franchise's first native mobile game, it retains classic elements such as collecting the 108 Stars and building a headquarters. A fully voiced story and the return of popular characters including Viktor and Flik appealed directly to the nostalgia and collecting impulses of core domestic fans. Launch summons, limited guaranteed pools, and the continued release of classic characters such as Jowy at month-end drove concentrated spending during the launch period.
Another new release, the MMORPG Zeus: God of Arrogance (제우스: 오만의 신), published by South Korea's Com2uS and developed by AButton, delivered an even stronger short-term performance. The product officially launched in South Korea on August 26 and generated more than $9.35 million in estimated revenue in less than one week at the end of the month. Daily revenue trends through early September remained elevated, with no obvious decline. The title's strong opening once again confirms the stable user base and monetization appeal of hardcore MMORPGs with Western fantasy themes in the South Korean market.
The martial-arts MMORPG Yulgang: Next (열혈강호: 넥스트), published by Kingnet Technology Limited, also grew rapidly in August. Unlike Zeus: God of Arrogance and its Western fantasy theme, this title uses an Eastern wuxia setting and enters the market through the classic comic IP Yulgang. A million-plus pre-registration base accumulated by games in the franchise, combined with celebrity marketing, provided ample initial traffic at launch and helped the product generate more than $8.54 million in estimated revenue during its first full month of operation.
Games adapted from Chinese online-literature IP also showed strong opening momentum in August. Battle Through the Heavens M: Rise of the Youth and Lord of Mysteries entered the revenue gainers chart with estimated revenue of approximately $7.25 million and $5.94 million, respectively. The former followed the established publishing playbook for online-literature IP products in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, China, and Macao, China. The latter chose a high-investment, cross-platform hardcore MMORPG format to adapt the original work's expansive worldbuilding into a game. Based solely on their current data performance, the gap between the two is limited.
